Executive Team

Chief Executive Officer

Stephen J. Fanning was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Z-Medica in March 2014.

Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Fanning was President and Chief Executive Officer of Solta Medical, Inc. (formerly Thermage, Inc.), a global leader in the medical aesthetic device market. Under his leadership, the Company went public in November 2006, raising $42 million. Solta Medical was sold to Valeant Pharmaceuticals in January 2014.

In August 2001, Mr. Fanning was President and Chief Executive Officer of Ocular Sciences, Inc., a $350 million global public company, which developed, manufactured and marketed disposable contact lenses. Under his leadership, Ocular Sciences implemented a next-generation manufacturing process, significantly driving down the cost of goods sold. Mr. Fanning also achieved significant increases in global market share, attaining more than $300 million in annual sales. In January 2005, Ocular Sciences was successfully acquired by CooperVision for $1.3 billion.

Mr. Fanning joined Ocular Sciences from Johnson & Johnson (J&J), one of the world's largest manufacturers of healthcare products, where he served in various senior executive positions of escalating responsibility for 25 years. His most recent position was President, Worldwide of J&J's McNeil Specialty Products division. Prior to that, he served as President of Johnson & Johnson Medical. Mr. Fanning has also served as Managing Director of J&J Austria/Switzerland and Vice President, Sales, of J&J's McNeil Consumer Products Division.

Mr. Fanning has an extensive background in the healthcare, consumer pharmaceuticals and consumer packaged goods industries.

Mr. Fanning holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Philadelphia University.


Chief Operating and Financial Officer

David M. Dean joined Z-Medica in April 2011 as Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Dean was promoted to the additional position of Chief Operating Officer in February 2012.

Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Dean served as Chief Operating and Financial Officer for a Connecticut-based consumer product company, Slocum & Sons. In addition to securing term and revolving credit facilities for the company, Mr. Dean structured and negotiated the successful sale of the company to a New York-based company in 2009. Mr. Dean remained Chief Operating and Financial Officer subsequent to the sale until joining Z-Medica.

In April 2003, Mr. Dean was hired as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Protedyne Corporation, a designer and manufacturer of sophisticated, robust automation technology used in diagnostic and drug discovery processes. Protedyne was a venture-backed company. Mr. Dean led three rounds of financing during his tenure at Protedyne, before LabCorp purchased the company in 2007.

Prior to Protedyne, Mr. Dean served as Vice President of Finance and Accounting at Packard BioScience, a Connecticut-based global company, which manufactures technology and assays used in the drug discovery process. During his tenure, he was integrally involved in thirteen acquisitions (both business and technology related) and three divestitures. In addition, Mr. Dean played a critical role in the company’s successful initial public offering in April 2001. Packard was eventually sold to Perkin Elmer Life Sciences where he served briefly as Chief Financial Officer of Integration, overseeing the global integration of Packard’s businesses with those of Perkin Elmer.

Previously, Mr. Dean worked at Arthur Andersen for thirteen years, serving in senior leadership roles. Mr. Dean was responsible for providing auditing and accounting services to several of the firm’s Fortune 500 clients. Mr. Dean is a Certified Public Accountant and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island.


Executive Vice President, Corporate Development

Dina Dubey is Executive Vice President, Corporate Development at Z-Medica and has been with the company since January 2011.

In this role, Ms. Dubey is responsible for Business Development, Research & Development, Quality Assurance, Clinical Affairs, and U.S. and International Regulatory Affairs. Prior to being promoted to this role, she held leadership positions in Business Development, Strategic Planning and Research & Development at Z-Medica.

Prior to joining Z-Medica, Ms. Dubey was a Biomaterials Research Manager at Kensey Nash Corporation (now DSM Biomedical). At Kensey Nash, she held numerous positions in research and product development, working on advanced biomaterials and regenerative medicine products using biomedical polyurethanes, resorbable polymers, bioceramics, coatings, collagens and extracellular matrices. Being a leading development and manufacturing partner, Ms. Dubey had the opportunity to collaborate with several small and large medical device companies and prominent research institutions during her time at Kensey Nash. Ms. Dubey gained broad experience developing products for various markets, including cardiovascular, orthopedics, sports medicine, neurosurgery, general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery and wound care. Leading cross-functional teams, she has extensive experience in all aspects of medical device development – from concept to launch.

Ms. Dubey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and dual Master of Science degrees in Engineering Management and Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Ms. Dubey is an inventor with issued and pending patents and is an author of peer-reviewed scientific publications.


Leadership Team

Vice President, Quality Assurance & International Regulatory Affairs

Joseph M. Azary joined Z-Medica in June 2012 as Vice President, Quality Assurance. Mr. Azary was promoted to the additional position of International Regulatory Affairs in January 2014.

Mr. Azary is responsible for quality and compliance activities, as well as international compliance, registrations and regulatory affairs.

Mr. Azary has over 25 years of experience in various quality and regulatory positions in the medical device and healthcare industry. Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Azary held positions with U.S. Surgical (now part of Covidien), Johnson & Johnson, Fujifilm Medical Systems and Sekisui Diagnostics. Additionally, Mr. Azary was the President and Owner of Azary Technologies, a regulatory and quality consultancy firm that worked with over 180 different medical device companies. Orchid Orthopedic Solutions acquired Azary Technologies in 2008.

Mr. Azary is a Certified Quality Auditor and an active member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Mr. Azary has held various positions on the ASQ Executive Board for the past thirteen years.

Mr. Azary holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from University of Connecticut and a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Public Health from Sacred Heart University.


Vice President, Manufacturing

Daniel J. Burns was appointed Vice President, Manufacturing for Z-Medica in June 2013 and has been with the company since April 2006.

Mr. Burns has held various positions in manufacturing during his tenure at Z-Medica. Currently, he is responsible for all in-house production, contract manufacturing, product and equipment purchasing and machine engineering. Mr. Burns also has responsibility for personnel training and process efficiency.

Mr. Burns has over 35 years of experience in various manufacturing disciplines. Mr. Burns started in the soft drink industry as plant manager, followed by 20 years in flexible packaging as Plant Manager, Vice President and Owner. Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Burns managed the production operations at Atherotech Lab, a cholesterol testing facility.

Mr. Burns received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and History from Jacksonville State University.


Vice President, U.S. Healthcare Sales

David J. Clarke was appointed Vice President, U.S. Healthcare Sales for Z-Medica in August 2014 and has been with the company since April 2013.

Mr. Clarke has over 20 years of experience in the medical device industry. Prior to joining Z-Medica, he held the position of Regional Vice President for Olympus America, a worldwide leader in medical video and endoscope manufacturing and sales. Previously, Mr. Clarke spent nearly 10 years, starting in 1996, with American Cystoscope Makers Inc. (ACMI). Mr. Clarke led ACMI, the last American endoscope maker, to become the primary leader in the sale of Urology-Gynecology surgical scopes and video systems throughout Northern New England. Mr. Clarke was also employed by B. Braun Medical and Pfizer.

Mr. Clarke holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics from St. Lawrence University and a Master of Arts degree in Government from Harvard University. He is also a former United States Army Intelligence Officer.


Vice President, Military & Tactical Programs

Scott A. Garrett is Vice President, Military and Tactical Programs for Z-Medica and has been with the company since June 2006.

Mr. Garrett leads the Military and Tactical business unit responsible for sales and training of QuikClot products to the United States Department of Defense, Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies and EMS/First Responders. Previously, Mr. Garrett held the position of Director of Military Relations and Government Affairs. Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Garrett held positions of increasingly greater responsibilities with Aventis Pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Garrett’s career began in the United States Army where he served more than eight years as an Armor Officer. Mr. Garrett served in numerous leadership positions in Armor and Cavalry organizations from platoon, company and battalion level with multiple deployments, including a combat tour in Iraq in 2003.

Mr. Garrett is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and a Distinguished Military Graduate. Mr. Garrett also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Arlington.


Vice President, International Sales

Mingo T. Ku was appointed Vice President, International Sales at Z-Medica in July 2014.

Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Ku served as the Vice President, Global Sales for Solta Medical, a global leader in the medical aesthetic device industry. Before managing the global sales effort, Mr. Ku held roles with increasing responsibilities, including Vice President, Asia and Vice President, International Sales. Mr. Ku established strategic initiatives and put teams in place to drive the international business and consistently achieve industry-leading growth and penetration.

Prior to Solta Medical, Mr. Ku spent nine years in the interventional cardiology industry with two of the leading global companies – seven years with Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson Company and two years with Boston Scientific International.

Mr. Ku possesses extensive international and global experience in marketing, sales, and business management.

Mr. Ku holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Maryland, College Park and a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Southern California.


Vice President, Corporate Accounts

Manny C. Montoya is Vice President, Corporate Accounts for Z-Medica and has been with the company since May 2013.

Mr. Montoya started his career at Z-Medica as an Area Vice President of Sales. Mr. Montoya was appointed to Vice President, Corporate Accounts in August 2014. Mr. Montoya responsible for the company’s Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) and Integrated Healthcare Network (IHN) direction and strategy.

Prior to joining Z-Medica, Mr. Montoya held numerous sales and leadership positions with a focus on executive-level selling and negotiating to hospitals, GPOs, and IHNs. Mr. Montoya previously served at medical device companies, including Mauna Kea Technologies, Inc., EndoGastric Solutions, Inc., Intuitive Surgical, Inc., and Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson.

Mr. Montoya holds a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Arizona. Mr. Montoya completed the internationally renowned Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.


Vice President, Finance & Controller

Melinda M. Polson joined Z-Medica in October 2005 as Controller. Ms. Polson was promoted to the additional position of Vice President, Finance in July 2013.

Ms. Polson oversees a broad range of departments, including financial reporting, cash management, customer service, sales and expense analysis and human resources. She has implemented new ERP systems, designed new financial reporting systems and improved human resource practices.

Prior to Z-Medica, Ms. Polson spent 15 years working in the private sector. Ms. Polson began her accounting career at Coopers & Lybrand and with a regional accounting firm performing audits, tax and consulting services. She specialized in client bases ranging from manufacturing and construction to financial services. Ms. Polson also launched her own consulting business. Her engagements focused on strategic planning and design for small business start-ups, along with design and implementation of accounting systems, tax and compilation work.

Ms. Polson is a Certified Public Accountant and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Connecticut.


Vice President, Clinical & U.S. Regulatory Affairs

Sheila K. Wallin is Vice President, Clinical and U.S. Regulatory Affairs at Z-Medica.

Ms. Wallin joined Z-Medica as Director of Clinical Affairs in July 2009. In January 2010, Ms. Wallin was promoted to Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs.

Ms. Wallin has over 27 years of experience in clinical and regulatory positions in the medical device industry. She held positions at Solace Therapeutics, Boston Scientific, Vesica Medical and Trymedine Incorporated. Additionally, Ms. Wallin was a co-founder of Solace and served on the Board of Directors from Solace’s inception in 1996 until 2007. Solace was a medical device company engaged in the development of non-surgical office-based treatments for common bladder disorders.

Ms. Wallin is a Clinical Research Associate and is active in the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. Ms. Wallin holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Asheville-Buncombe College and worked as a Special Procedures Technologist prior to transitioning to the medical device business.
